Welcome to the world of the ancient guardian dog of the Himalayas
Tibetan mastiffs have been bred for at least a thousand years in the high mountains and plateaus of the Himalayas as an all purpose guard dog and companion. They were used to guard flocks of goats, yak herds and villages, often with little or no human guidance, in one of the most severe climates on earth where the winters were marked by frigid cold at 16,000 feet and the summers were hot and dry because of the high altitude. Predators included snow leopards, Himalayan wolves, and presumably, some humans. The Tibetan mastiff was expected to defend its charges from all of these and to warn its human companions of any approach.
